Suffrage
Topic : Suffrage
In this topic you will learn...
Chapter 1 :
The voting rights of various groups
Prior to 1901, Australia was made up of six colonies which had their own laws
It was originally only men over 21 years who had property who could vote
South Australia was the first colony to extend the franchise
In 1901 the colonies became the Commonwealth of Australia
The Franchise Act 1902 (Cth) gave women the right to vote in federal elections
'Non-whites' were not entitled to vote in federal elections, except for those who had the right to vote at State level
Chapter 2 :
How women achieved the vote
Groups such as the Victorian Women's Suffrage Society organised numerous campaigns
The suffragettes believed that their female perspective would ensure the protection of women, children and the poor
Both men and women opposed suffragettes out of the belief that they were unsuitable for politics
South Australia was the first colony to grant adult female citizens the right to vote and to stand for election
Parliament felt compelled to give all non-Indigenous adult women the vote in federal elections, since some women already had a State vote
