Topic : Heritage
In this topic you will learn...
Chapter 1 :
Why is our heritage important?
Our heritage is our link to the past. Anything from the past that is treasured, is heritage
It is important because it can tell you something about where you came from
Our treasures need to be preserved and kept safe
Future generations can also see their heritage and know where
they
came from
It is not just personal heritage that is important to keep
There is also the heritage of a community or a country to be preserved
Heritage can be found all around us - even in the natural world
It is not just man-made things that are a part of our heritage, for example, Uluru
Our heritage helps us discover who and why we are
Imagine how hard it must be for people who grow up with no family history or heritage
Chapter 2 :
World heritage
To be named as a World Heritage site, a place must be of exceptional value to the world
These sites have to be protected for future generations
In the 1960s a list was created of all the places of importance to world heritage
The list of World Heritage sites is overseen by UNESCO
Australia is particularly rich in World Heritage listed areas, with 16 sites
World Heritage sites belong to
ALL
the people of the world
Every year new places are put on the World Heritage list for protection
There are also many more sites that are put on the endangered list
These are places where the site is in danger of being lost forever
Chapter 3 :
Aboriginal heritage: rock art
In New South Wales alone there are over 13 000 sites relating to Aboriginal heritage
Cave paintings are an example of Aboriginal heritage that is sacred to Aboriginal people
Cave paintings are also a great investigative tool for historians
Some of the surviving paintings are nearly 20 000 years old
There mare many different types of rock art - contact, X-ray, splatter, outline
Some of the best examples of cave paintings can be found in Kakadu National Park
Kakadu is very rich in contact art and there are many pictures showing the European arrivals
All States and Territories have legislation which protects Indigenous heritage sites
We have to be careful when studying Aboriginal sites as it is important not to disturb them
