Chapter 1 :
The construction of the Sydney Harbour Bridge
The idea of a bridge across Sydney Harbour had been considered since 1815
It was not until 1922 that the project was seriously considered
Work began on both ends of the bridge in 1925, ending in the middle five years later
Building the bridge involved a lot of engineering ingenuity
By the end of 1931 the bridge was complete and had undergone a series of safety tests
It was officially opened by the State Premier, Jack Lang, on 19 March 1932
To many, the bridge was a symbol of economic prosperity and triumph over adversity
It is now an icon of Australia and recognisable all around the world
Chapter 2 :
The Berlin Wall - from construction to destruction
The Berlin Wall was a symbol of social, cultural and political division
After World War II, Germany and Berlin were divided between the Allied powers
East Germany came under communist control, West Germany under capitalist control
The Wall was erected at the height of the Cold War between the USSR and America
It was built to stop East Germans fleeing communism and going to the West
The Wall was five metres high and 45 kilometres long
Many people died trying to get across the Wall - 45 in the first year alone
It stood until 9 November 1989 when communism came to an end in East Germany
There were massive street parties in Berlin and people began to demolish the wall
Parts of it remain in place as a memorial to those who died trying to cross it
Chapter 3 :
The assassination of Franz Ferdinand
Archduke Franz Ferdinand was the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne
He was assassinated on 28 June 1914 in Sarajevo
37 days later Europe was at war. Was his death responsible for World War I?
There were many long-term causes of WWI, such as the European system of alliances
The assassination was only one of several short-term triggers
Franz Ferdinand's death was not the sole reason Europe went to war in 1914
The assassination was a part of a long chain of events which led to war
