Stalin - a totalitarian dictator
Joseph Stalin was born in the Russian province of Georgia in 1878
He became a member of the Marxist Bolshevik Party in 1898
After the 1917 communist revolution Stalin became a member of the Politburo
He was appointed General Secretary of the Communist Party in 1922
When Lenin died in 1924 there was a power struggle among the politburo
By 1929 Stalin had emerged as the leader of communist Russia
His regime was totalitarian and oppressive, he ruled by fear
Stalin was a master of propaganda
He created a 'personality cult' to make people love and admire him
Perhaps as many as 30 million people died during his time in power
Chapter 2 :
Mother Teresa
Agnes Bojaxhiu was born on 27 August 1910 in Eastern Europe
As a child she was inspired by the work Catholic missionaries did with poor people
She decided to become a missionary and took her vows as a nun in 1931
At this time she adopted the name of Teresa, after the Catholic Saint
She became a teacher in India and also began working with the poor
In 1946 she had her 'day of inspiration' when God told her to work in the slums
In 1950 she started her own order - The Congregation of the Missionaries of Charity
She helped the dying, the poor, orphans and lepers
In 1979 she received the Nobel Peace Prize and used the prize money to help the poor
She died in 1997, famous for her work among the poor and the sick
