Case study: a regional relationship
Topic : Case study: a regional relationship
In this topic you will learn...
Chapter 1 :
Australian aid in Indonesia
Australia and Indonesia have been development partners for many years
AusAID has identified the key to assisting Indonesia as improving its production and investment climate
The impact of the 2004 Tsunami Disaster has been addressed by bilateral agreements such as the Australia-Indonesia Partnership for Reconstruction and Development (AIPRD)
AIPRD aims to support Indonesia`s reconstruction and development efforts
AIPRD supports economic and social reform and promotes security and stability
Chapter 2 :
Government and non-government roles
The Australian Government sees opportunities that arise from a stable Indonesia as it is currently its tenth largest export market and eighth largest foreign direct investor
Government and non-government aid organisations have roles in assisting the following in Indonesia
democratic reform
social services
security
regional development
humanitarian issues
Chapter 3 :
Treaties and agreements
Australia`s most recent aid development treaty is the Australia-Indonesia Partnership for Reconstruction and Development (AIPRD)
AIPRD is the single largest aid package in Australia`s history, bringing its total aid commitment to Indonesia to almost $2 billion over five years
The partnership is based on such priorities as health, education and local government services in Aceh
Agreement has also been reached on rehabilitation assistance and natural disaster management
A Government Partnerships Fund supports the exchange of skills and expertise
Chapter 4 :
Cultural and economic advantages and disadvantages
Economic benefits that come from Australia`s aid to Indonesia include long-term development, employment and training, an ongoing demand for Australian goods and services in Indonesia, and regional security
Cultural benefits come from the encouragement of friendly relations between Indonesia and Australia and the future positive exchanges of cultural values
Disadvantages come from the inequitable distribution of aid, rights abuses, and government corruption resulting from over reliance on aid income
Chapter 5 :
Social justice and equity implications
Equity issues have arisen over cases of discrimination in distributing aid once it is received in Indonesia
Equity issues have arisen over the emphasis put by aid agencies on aggregate economic growth over economic disparity and its social consequences
The focus on improving social institutions is arguably too abstract or technical to meet the reality of needs in underdeveloped areas
