Introduction
Geography is the spatial and temporal study of people and places in the world
Geography can be divided into two main branches, physical geography and human geography

Geographers use a number of tools to collect information which they sort, record, interpret, compare and draw conclusions from

Gathering information
The ability to be observant is an important skill for a geographer
Geographers classify related features into groups, often separating them into the categories of physical or cultural
Geographers often seek information from people through conversational interviews
Alternatively, geographers analyse responses from questionnaires to draw conclusions
Surveys collect information from a group of people, which are considered to be representative of the whole
Counting and measuring surveys are often used in geography
Chapter 3 :
Describing places
Being able to describe places is an important skill for geographers
It often is easier to describe a place if it is divided into smaller parts and classified according to cultural or physical features
When describing an image, features including animals, climate, landforms, landuse, settlements and vegetation should all be considered
Chapter 4 :
Using an atlas
An atlas is a collection of representations of the Earth's surface
Atlases show information classified as quantitative data and contrastive data
Mapping techniques include colour and variation, lines and dots
Information which cannot be effectively displayed on a map is often expressed in the form of an illustration, diagram or graph
Atlases usually feature a contents page and an index page, which has a page reference and a longitudinal and latitudinal reference

Doing your own research
An effective way to learn something is by conducting a research investigation
Students should begin their investigation by selecting a topic of interest and forming a hypothesis
To prove or disprove the hypothesis, students need to select a method to collect data
Once results have been collected, they need to be reported so that they can be referred back to
