Maps 1
Topic : Maps 1
In this topic you will learn...
Chapter 1 :
What is a map?
A map is a simplified, diagrammatic representation of a three-dimensional space
The technique of organising spatial information on a map is called cartography
Traditional Indigenous maps used symbols to represent camp sites and water holes
Many professions, including meteorology, rely on the use of maps, such as synoptic charts
It is difficult to accurately represent a three-dimensional curved surface on a flat plane without any distortion
Chapter 2 :
Symbols and legends
Symbols are a useful way of representing information in a limited space
Map use point symbols, line symbols an area symbols
Cartographers (map makers) try to use symbols that resemble the feature that they are representing
If a symbol is frequently used by different cartographers, it can become accepted as a mapping convention
A legend is a table which explains the meanings of symbols used on a corresponding map
Chapter 3 :
Directions
The cardinal points are north, south, east and west
The compass was developed around 1700 years ago in ancient China
All maps should have a direction on them, even if it is only a north point
It has become an accepted convention for most modern maps in Western culture to feature north at the top
Maps can be orientated (when north on the map is aligned with north on the ground) using a compass or a wrist watch
Chapter 4 :
Scale
Since the Earth is so massive, it would be impractical to always create a map which was true to size
A scale shows how a dimension on a map corresponds with the dimension it represents in the real world
Scales can be expressed in the form 1 unit to 'n' unit(s), 1:n (units) or 1/n (units)
Dimensions in the real world can be calculated by measuring a map drawn to scale
Large scale maps show more detail and small scale maps show a larger area
