Workplace disputes
Topic : Workplace disputes
In this topic you will learn...
Chapter 1 :
Pre-twentieth century conditions
Our present working conditions originate in the nineteenth century Industrial Revolution
Working conditions were poor until workers demanded improvements
Nineteenth century Australia featured 'master and servant' conditions for convicts
Australia became known as a 'worker's paradise'
The first unions collectively bargained for improved conditions and entitlements enjoyed by most Australian workers today
Chapter 2 :
Unions
Unions are groups of workers collectively bargaining for improved pay and conditions
Unions represent workers at national wage decisions and in test cases
Standard working hours and leave provisions are the result of union struggles
Unions struggle to maintain membership in our changing workplaces
Recent Australian employment legislation makes it more difficult for unions to negotiate improved pay and conditions for many of its members
Chapter 3 :
Employers and increased regulation
Businesses promote their interests in employers associations
Two powerful business lobbies include The Business Council of Australia (BCA) and the Australian Industry Group (AIG)
Employer associations lobby the government to influence policy and improve the business operating environment
Businesses will generally approve of legislation that decreases regulation (control) of how business can operate
Chapter 4 :
Dispute resolution
Workplace disputes can now be solved 'out of court'
There were many workplace disputes under the system of conciliation and arbitration
Negotiation, mediation and grievance procedures can be effective if both parties to a dispute are reasonable
Industrial Tribunals feature prominently when unions and employers cannot resolve their disputes over employees' pay and conditions
The rise of workplace agreements and new employment legislation has reduced ongoing disputes
