The challenges that ICT presents to democracies
There are both challenges and potentials that information and communication technologies offer democracies
Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is concerned with the use of technology
New technologies, particularly computers, are having a significant effect on everyone's lives
There is much public debate over the use and impact of ICTs in democracies
New ICTs offer the opportunity for more people to become involved in politics
ICTs increase the amount of information available
A challenge that people in a democracy face with regard to ICTs is the issue of losing their privacy
ICTs offer governments the ability to engage in more extensive forms of consultation with citizens
The internet does not always provide reliable information
Chapter 2 :
The potentials that ICT offers to democracies
New forms of interactive communication gives people the ability to publish information
New technologies have a number of major implications for political parties
The internet offers smaller political parties a means to reach their supporters and publicise themselves
ICTs can transform the way politicians communicate with citizens
ICTs have the potential to have a great influence on the democratic electoral process
ICTs have the potential to be used for electronic and online voting
ICTs give citizens a chance to participate more in the democratic process
People are given more information and more choice through new technologies
Chapter 3 :
The social justice aspect of ICT and democracy
Governments and organisations need to make sure there is equal access to technologies
Social justice refers to the concept of justice applied to an entire society
A just society is one which gives individuals and groups fair treatment and a just share of the benefits of society
Social justice is an important issue in politics, particularly in democracies
People who do not have access to technology are disadvantaged
The digital divide is a social barrier that restricts participation in ICTs by certain members of society
For a society to be democratic, all citizens must have equal access to ICTs
Chapter 4 :
Protecting democracy
Democracy is about giving people the power to shape the nature of the society they live in
Citizens must work together to protect a democracy
The use of the internet and other ICTs allows more people to present their points of view to a wider audience
The more information that we have available to us, the more power we have
Democracy will be protected if citizens have access to information and the freedom to give their opinions and views
ICTs offer the opportunity for more active participants in politics
ICT can provide ways to protect democracy, but people must remain cautious with its use
Democracies will remain strong and successful if every citizen plays a part in protecting them
