Topic : Charging!
In this topic you will learn...
Chapter 1 :
Are you positive?
A charge is an influence of energy that moves particles in a particular direction
An atom is made up of a nucleus of protons and neutrons, orbited by electrons
Protons are positively charged, neutrons have no charge and electrons are negatively charged
Charge occurs through the addition or removal of electrons
To become positively charged, an atom must lose electrons but to become negatively charged, an atom must gain electrons
Unlike charges attract and like charges repel
Friction is the energy given to a substance through rubbing
Chapter 2 :
Attracted with no charge
An induced charge occurs when a charged object stimulates a neutral object, giving the neutral object a temporary charge
Electrostatic force is the energy that gives objects the power of attraction and repulsion
Static electricity is the build up of electrostatic force
Static electricity is still or slow-moving
Discharge occurs when static electricity balances its positive and negative charge
Chapter 3 :
Using static electricity
Earthing is the process of discharging static electricity to a neutral object such as the ground
Electricity has a charge that attracts neutral particles of dust
The Van de Graaff generator uses frictional movement to produce a high voltage charge
Static electricity in clouds produces light and sound in the form of lightning and thunder
A number of technologies use static electricity, including microfibre cloths, photocopiers, spray nozzles, air filters and audio speakers
